Everything ships wired, tested, and ready to connect on site. This is the main advantage over a conventional substation, which needs a purpose-built structure, separate equipment delivery, and on-site assembly before it can carry any load.
Standard Sizes and Power Ratings
Most transformer containers use a 20ft or 40ft ISO shell, reinforced with additional structural steel to support the weight of the transformer and switchgear inside. A 20ft unit typically houses a single transformer and switchgear setup, while a 40ft unit can carry dual transformers for parallel operation or higher capacity needs.
Power ratings vary by application. Distribution-level units commonly handle voltages between 6.6kV and 22kV, suited to industrial sites and construction projects. Larger utility-grade units scale up to 66kV, with capacity reaching tens of megavolt-amperes for grid-level deployment.
The exact transformer size, oil-filled or dry-type, and switchgear configuration all depend on the load the site needs to carry, which is why these units are typically built to a project's specific electrical requirements rather than sold as one-size-fits-all stock.
Certification and Compliance Standards
A transformer container carries two separate sets of requirements: structural standards for the container itself, and electrical standards for what is inside it.
The container shell typically follows ISO container construction standards, with CSC certification confirming it meets international transport requirements. This matters for units that need to move by sea or road between sites.
The electrical systems inside follow IEC standards, commonly IEC 62271-202 for compact substations, along with local grid code requirements. In the UAE, this means compliance with the relevant utility authority's technical specifications before a unit can connect to the grid, whether that authority is DEWA in Dubai, ADDC in Abu Dhabi, or SEWA in Sharjah.
Fire protection, arc fault containment, and ventilation design all fall under these electrical standards, since a fault inside an enclosed container carries different risks than the same fault in an open-air substation yard.

Site Requirements Before Installation
A transformer container needs a level, load-bearing foundation pad, even though it does not require the deep civil foundation a traditional substation building needs. Cable trenches or ducting must be planned before delivery, since the unit connects to incoming and outgoing power lines on arrival.
Ventilation clearance around the unit matters for cooling, particularly in UAE ambient temperatures, where oil-filled transformers need adequate airflow to avoid derating. Access for maintenance, including space to open equipment compartment doors fully, should be planned into the site layout from the start.
Lifting point placement affects how the unit gets positioned during installation. Confirming crane requirements and lift plan details with the supplier before delivery day avoids delays once the unit arrives on site.
What to Ask Before Ordering a Transformer Container
Confirm the transformer type, oil-filled or dry-type, matches your site's safety and environmental requirements. Ask which grid code and utility authority standards the unit is built to, since this differs across UAE emirates. Get the factory acceptance test results and commissioning documentation in writing before delivery, not after. And confirm ventilation and cooling design accounts for actual UAE ambient temperatures, not a generic climate assumption.
A unit built to the wrong local standard, or without documentation matching the actual equipment inside, causes delays at the exact point you need power flowing, during connection and commissioning.
