An offshore container looks like a standard shipping container from the outside. The difference is what happens if it fails. A standard container that fails on a truck causes a delay. An offshore container that fails during a crane lift over open water puts lives at risk.
That is why DNV 2.7-1 certification exists, and why buyers on oil and gas projects can not treat offshore containers as a standard purchase.
What DNV 2.7-1 Certification Actually Covers
DNV 2.7-1 is a design and testing standard for offshore containers and offshore freight units. It covers structural strength, lifting frame design, and drop testing under simulated offshore conditions.
A container built to this standard has passed load testing well beyond normal cargo handling. The frame, lifting points, and corner fittings are engineered to handle repeated crane lifts, wave motion during transfer, and impact loads that a standard ISO container was never designed for.
A certificate should accompany every unit, listing the test standard, load rating, and inspection date. If a supplier cannot produce this certificate on request, the unit should not go offshore, regardless of how it looks.
DNV Offshore Containers vs Standard ISO Containers
Both look similar in size and shape. The engineering underneath is not the same.
Standard ISO containers are rated for stacking and general cargo transport, based on CSC certification under ISO 6346. This covers road, rail, and sea transport in normal conditions.
DNV offshore containers carry additional structural reinforcement at the lifting points, a different frame design rated for offshore crane operations, and a testing regime that includes drop tests and proof load tests specific to offshore handling.
Using a standard container for offshore work, even one in excellent physical condition, does not meet the engineering requirement. The steel may look identical. The lifting frame was never tested for the loads an offshore transfer applies.
What to Check With Offshore Container Providers in UAE
A few direct checks separate a compliant supplier from one hoping the paperwork question does not come up.
Valid DNV 2.7-1 certificate, matched to the physical unit:
Ask for the certificate number and confirm it matches the plate on the container itself, not a generic document for the model type.
Recent inspection date:
Offshore certification has a validity period. A certificate from several years ago without a recent re-inspection may no longer reflect the container's actual condition.
Load rating specific to your operation:
Different offshore projects require different load ratings. Confirm the certified rating matches what your lift plan requires, not just a general offshore rating.
ADNOC or operator-specific compliance documentation:
Where required. Energy sector operators in the UAE often require documentation beyond the base DNV certificate. Ask upfront whether the supplier has delivered to your specific site type before.
Physical inspection access before delivery:
A supplier confident in their unit will let you inspect the frame and fittings before it ships. Reluctance here is a warning sign.
Offshore Frame Fabrication in UAE: What Goes Into the Build
The lifting frame is the part of an offshore container that does the real engineering work. It is welded and reinforced to transfer load from the crane hook through the corner fittings and into the container structure without deforming under repeated lifts.
Fabrication for offshore-rated frames requires certified welders working to the DNV specification, not general container welding standards. The welds at load-bearing points get inspected individually, often with non-destructive testing methods, before the unit goes through drop and proof load testing.
This process takes longer and costs more than standard container modification. Buyers comparing prices between suppliers should ask directly whether this level of fabrication and testing is actually included, or whether the quote reflects a standard container with a certificate attached after the fact.

Oil and gas operators:
Moving equipment, tools, and supplies to offshore platforms need certified units for every offshore lift, with documentation that satisfies both DNV and operator-specific site requirements.
Marine and subsea contractors:
Working on cable laying, pipeline, or subsea construction projects use offshore containers for tool storage and equipment transfer between vessels and installation sites.
Renewable energy operators:
Particularly offshore wind projects rely on the same certification standard for equipment and crew transfer containers during construction and maintenance phases.

Before ordering, ask to see the DNV 2.7-1 certificate matched to the physical unit, confirm the load rating fits your lift plan, and ask whether the frame was fabricated to offshore specification or modified from standard stock afterward.
