Open Top Container Dubai: When the Flat Rack Is Not the Right Unit

A flat rack and an open top container solve different problems. Knowing which one you need before you book saves time and cost at the port.

An open top container in Dubai has the full side walls and end walls of a standard container but no fixed roof. A removable tarpaulin covers the cargo from above. The structure provides side protection and lashing points on all four walls, which a flat rack does not. Cargo loads through the open top using a crane.

The open top container is the right choice when cargo is too tall for a standard container but fits within the 2.44-metre width of the container body. Tall machinery, coiled steel, bulk stone, and large rolls of industrial material commonly ship in open top containers through Dubai and Abu Dhabi ports.

Open top containers in Dubai are available in 20ft and 40ft sizes. Standard internal height for a 20ft open top is 2.35 metres to the top of the side walls. Cargo that exceeds this height protrudes above the container, classified as over-height OOG cargo, and requires the same special stowage and declaration process as flat rack OOG shipments.

The key decision between a flat rack container and an open top container comes down to two factors. If your cargo exceeds the container width, you need a flat rack. If your cargo fits within the width but exceeds the height, an open top is the more practical choice, it provides better side protection and is generally easier to handle at the port.

ISO Tank Container Dubai: Liquid Cargo That Needs a Certified Solution

An ISO tank container in Dubai is a cylindrical pressure vessel built inside an ISO framework. It carries liquids, chemicals, food-grade liquids, edible oils, hazardous materials, and non-hazardous bulk liquids in a contained, certified structure that moves through ports, on trucks, and on vessels using standard container handling equipment.

ISO tank containers are built to ISO 1496/3 standard. Every unit undergoes pressure testing, impact testing, and leak resistance testing before it carries product.
